    *LISTING ENDS MAY 20!*
Hakata dolls (or ningyō) are one of the most iconic artistic crafts made in Fukuoka, located on Kyushu in southern Japan. This 12” Hakata doll was modeled in the image of Yuya, a character from a traditional Japanese Noh (Nō) performance. Derived from the Sino-Japanese word for “talent”, Noh is a type of musical drama that first appeared in the 14th century. It is the oldest major form of theater art still performed today, integrating many traditionally-styled masks, props, and costumes.
As the story goes, Yuya was a beautiful girl who served the noble Kumano family. Her only wish was to visit her mother, who was suffering from a fatal illness. Her master denied her request at first, but after seeing her talent at dancing, he changed his mind and allowed the mother and daughter to reunite.
This offer includes the Hakata doll, a decorative fan that fits in the doll’s hand, an official placard, a three-piece wooden stand, and a golden backing panel. The wooden platform is 11.5 inches by 21 inches. The doll itself stands at 12 inches high, while the assembled platform and panel stand at roughly 19 inches tall.
