Vintage 1940's - '50's Handmade Flour Sack Apron, Medium LengthThis is a rescued piece I found at a garage sale -- it had been tossed in a trash bag with some other odds and ends and I noticed it. I could tell right away it was a vintage piece and very likely made of flour sack material. If you look at the third picture in the cue, you can see where the fabric has been pieced on one side -- the other side is also pieced that way. Flour sacks came in various sizes, and women had to piece them into appropriate widths when making articles like this, so the seams are a clue. My mother and grandmother used to make and wear aprons just like this when I was a little girl, so I'm pretty sure of the date, too. This one is made with a really pretty purple violet and green leaves print. The whole apron was edged with bias binding that has been sewn on with a zig-zag stitch. Sewing machines with a zig-sag feature were introduced to the public after World War II, which is another clue to its age. It has been worn, but it is in really good, solid condition. A fun piece for a mid-century retro look.
