* Antique pair of Japanese Hina Dolls: Emperor and Empress !
* From Taisho period ( 1912-1926).
* There are
spots above the dolls' eyebrows.
"Those are called "okimayu" or sky brows.
In Heian court culture the natural eyebrows would have been shaved and these higher brows would have been painted in.
Later they became a symbol of nobility.
Any doll figure with skybrows would depict someone from the imperial court."
* Very detailed, clothings.
Elaborate, layered textiles.
Detailed white faces and hands.
Both have elaborate headdresses.
They are on textile covered and black lacquered, gold painted wooden bases.
* Bases made of two pieces.
Textile covered separate top parts sits / fits on lacquered bottom parts.
* Empress' headdress is very detailed and fragile.
Made of brass / copper. And some elements are corroded. (patina).
* Condition: There is a hole in Empreror's right hand.
I think he was holding something and its missing now...
On the Empress's base front left-top has chipped / painted area.
* As is, in antique condition.
* Dimensions, approx. :
Emperor: 4.5" H.
Empress: 5.5" H.
Black Base: 6.5" W x 5.25" L...
Double base: 2.75" H...
Overall: 7.25" & 8.25" H...
